Barack Obama presented Jasper Johns, a minimalist/conceptual artist, with the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Tuesday.

This is the first time since 1988 that an artist has received this award, whose recipients are usually politicians or military members. Georgia O'Keefe is the only female artist to have been honored.
